Sod turned on new Tesco store for Cavan Town

30 Apr , 2026

Tesco has officially started work on a new store in Cavan Town, with a sod-turning event to mark the beginning of construction.

This marks a major multi-million euro investment in the town, supporting local jobs during the build phase and creating new roles in store when it opens, enhancing the team of over 60 people who already work in the existing Tesco Cavan store.

Local construction firm Elliott Group will build the new 35,000 sq. ft. store, designed to make everyday shopping better for Cavan customers.

The store will feature the best quality Irish food and drink products along with international favourites and will include the latest F&F fashion and a Tesco Mobile phone shop.

And Tesco will keep backing local, with products including Barry John’s sausages, Cully’s bread, Drummully Boxty, and Tesco Finest pizzas made by Crust & Crumb on shelves, alongside plenty of other Irish branded and own-label products.

Shoppers can look also forward to Grocery Home Shopping so they can have shopping delivered straight to their door.

The store will be fitted with the most up-to-date energy saving measures, such as doors on fridges and efficient lighting which will help to reduce its environmental impact. There’ll also be plenty of parking, including EV charging points for customers.

Colleagues and guests from Tesco, Cavan County Council, local schools, and Elliott Group came together today to celebrate the start of works.

Speaking at the event, Tesco Ireland Property Director Arlene Maguire said: “We’re delighted to get started on our long-awaited new store in Cavan Town, and looking forward to bringing customers a bright, modern store with more choice, while continuing to support local jobs and local suppliers. Working with the Elliott Group, a Cavan company with a strong track record in construction, is a great way for us to keep our investment local too.” Elliott Group CEO Darragh Elliott added: “We’re proud to be working with Tesco on this development here in Cavan, a place that has always been central to Elliott Group. Projects like this are about more than construction, they support local jobs and contribute to the wider community. To be delivering that in our home town, alongside a partner like Tesco, is something we value greatly.”

Construction will continue through 2026. The existing Tesco Cavan store will stay open as normal throughout the build, with colleagues moving to their new store when it opens in 2027.
